Scotland is a country with a list of good points longer than the River Tay. But in some cases, one benefit becomes a drawback: it's sparsely populated.

Yes, a sparse population can mean idyllic, peaceful scenery. But if you're looking for car finance, it's something of a spanner in the works.

Scotland has plenty of car dealerships, of course. They're just not necessarily close to you. Getting car finance on the forecourt can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

If this is a problem you're facing, you're in luck. You've got options – and neither of them involve stepping foot out of the front door.

How to get car finance if you're not near a dealership

Option one: get a personal loan

Your first option is to get a personal loan online. You can get these from high street banks, supermarkets and comparison sites.

Now, technically speaking, a personal loan isn't car finance. Unlike with a finance agreement, the loan isn't tied to the car. You can use it for just about any purpose.

However, like car finance, it's money you must repay in fixed instalments.

Personal loans have their advantages. Perhaps best of all, you own the car from day one.

This is different from hire purchase (HP) and personal contract purchase (PCP) car finance agreements. With these agreements, the lender owns the car until the final payment has been made.

There are other reasons you might choose a personal loan:

  • You don't face any mileage restrictions
  • You're allowed to modify the car
  • You can buy from a private seller or auction, as well as dealerships

Once your personal loan is in the bank, you can buy a car from a local private seller or a nearby-ish dealership that offers delivery.

Downsides of a personal loan: more freedom, potentially more hassle

A personal loan can be a good option if you already know which car you want and are happy to arrange everything yourself. But it does mean taking care of the finance separately from the purchase.

You'll need to find a suitable car, make sure you're happy with its condition and price and then arrange collection or delivery to Scotland.

If you'd rather have the car and finance arranged together, that's where a car finance broker can make things simpler. With Zoomo, you can browse our available cars, apply for finance and have your chosen vehicle delivered to your door. That's true even if you're hundreds of miles from our Newcastle dealership.

Option two: use Zoomo's delivery service

Here at Zoomo, we deliver vehicles directly from our showroom in Newcastle to your home in Scotland. This means you don't need either to visit us here or arrange transportation – a time-consuming task that's not always possible. Take out an agreement with us and delivery is covered.

Plus, you might also have a better chance of securing finance with us than getting a loan from a high-street bank. That's because we often work with drivers who have poor credit scores, connecting them with a wide panel of specialist dealers. We firmly believe that your financial history shouldn't determine whether you can get the car you need.

We deliver to Glasgow, Edinburgh and across Scotland. Simply check your eligibility on our website, secure your vehicle finance and select a used car from our online stock.

Crucially, this eligibility check is a soft search. That means it won't affect your credit score at this stage. A hard search is only performed when you've weighed your options and made a formal application.

That's one of the key advantages of working with a car finance broker like us. We put you in touch with lenders so you don't have to make direct applications and hard searches.

Once that's done, we do the rest. Our friendly and knowledgeable team take care of shipping, routing and paperwork while you get on with your life north of the border.

Why work with us?

Picture of a woman looking happy in a car.

We're a specialist finance dealer, meaning we regularly work with drivers who have poor credit histories.

We do this by connecting them with a wide panel of specialist lenders – lenders who will consider your current affordability alongside your credit score.

We have a 96% acceptance rate, saving you time and avoidable rejections by putting you in touch only with lenders who will look favourably on your application.

And just to put your mind at rest, "bad-credit car finance" doesn't mean "bad-quality cars". Quite the contrary – our cars are RAC Approved and prepared to AA Cars standards before they show up on our forecourt or online.

These accreditations matter whoever and wherever you are, of course. But if you're buying remotely, they add an extra layer of reassurance to your purchase.

Our application is super quick and super easy. The online application process takes a matter of minutes, and many customers find out whether they're eligible within the hour. However, this may take longer if there's any missing or unclear information.

And because we're a small, close-knit team – not a faceless corporation – you can always speak to someone on the phone. We never hit you with sales patter, and we always answer questions directly and honestly.

What kinds of car finance do you provide?

We give you the option of hire purchase (HP) or personal contract purchase (PCP) car finance agreements. Learn more about how car finance works and the different types available.

What kinds of cars are best for driving in Scotland?

Scotland's terrain is vast and varied. But outside the major cities, you're often faced with single-track roads. These can be a challenge to navigate in some vehicles.

That's why we would recommend a compact hatchback or small estate car for driving in Scotland. These cars are small enough for paper-thin single-track roads while still providing ample boot space.

Great cars of this kind include:

  • Toyota Yaris
  • Dacia Sandero
  • Ford Focus Estate
  • Skoda Octavia Estate
  • Renault Clio
